On 3 December, recalls the disaster in Bhopal, India in 1984, when thousands of people died because of the 27,000 tons of toxic gas escaped from the factory of pesticides by the U.S. company Union Carbide.
Twenty years after British doctors said accident unveil study held in Bhopal in the vicinity of the factory. The report says that "there is a high level of chemical contamination in drinking water in 15 communities," in and around Union Carbide, contains levels of carbon tetrachloride and other persistent organic pollutants, solvents and heavy metals.
The report concludes that "the population in the study areas there is a high level of births with birth defects, cancer, neurological damage, mental illness among others."
Substances escaped in the accident were meant to be used in India and other countries. A quarter century after accident, the consequences are still present in Bhopal. Unfortunately this could have served to warn of the negative impacts of these substances, but it was not. The only thing achieved is that countries like the European Union have banned the use of some pesticides.
Agrochemicals widely employed in the agricultural and household pesticides and urban, are substances designed to kill organisms that affect animals, crops or property, or alter the public health. As often "non-selective" may also harm other living beings, including humans. Since that may pollute air, water, food and soil, have the capacity reaching the human and domestic animals or breeding. Worldwide
sold more than 800 active ingredients in tens of thousands of formulations.
Our reality does not escape the world. However, the main difference is that in Uruguay the use of a wide range of pesticides banned or severely restricted not only in the European Union but in many countries.
